Understand Windows vs. Linux Hosting Plans

Windows and Linux are two different commonly used operating systems that web hosting servers use. There are normally different web hosting web hosting plans depending on a lot of things. Some of the things or features that determine the various grades or type of hosting plans include -: the memory available to such plans, the type of applications, the number of domains that can be hosted for each plan, the type of scripting languages that can be allowed etc. Smaller plans cost much less and normally have fewer features while the bigger plans cost more and they normally have more features.

There are many similarities between Windows and Linux hosting plans but most times the differences between them are more emphasized. One of the differences between them is how to access your files on the web server. Windows and Linux normally offer File Transfer Protocol (FTP) access to files on the server; but Linux systems also offer telnet or ssh access to files on the server. This is important when editing your webpage or web content. The new files can be uploaded to the server using these various access (whichever one is applicable) to do it.

Another thing that is considered as a difference is the kind of file name extensions used for both systems. Web content are usually saved on the web servers in the form of files, and each file must have a name by which it is identified. Files that are hosted on Window hosting plans normally end with .htm while files that are hosted on Linux hosting plans typically end with .html after the file name. The difference between these operating systems may not be that conspicuous in this case except in a few different instances.

A lot of websites these days often have one form or the other to be filled and submitted on such sites. There must be a provision meant to process these forms when the site is designed. Some of the most common scripts or programming languages that are used in programming these forms are Perl, CGI, PHP, ASP and Cold Fusion. Both Windows and Linux operating systems accept these scripts; the only difference between them is the preference of one operating system for a particular script over the others. For instance, PHP is found more often on Linux systems while ASP is often more found on Windows systems. Cold fusion can be found on any of the operating systems.
